The Lafayette County Juneteenth Foundation will host an observance of the 150th Anniversary of Juneteenth.  This event will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 10 am to 2 pm at the  4-H Building at the Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO. The theme is “May We Forever Stand.”  Arron Haynes is the chairperson for this event. This is a free family-oriented event. 

The day’s activities will include a three on three basketball tournament, music, a potluck dinner, special displays from the Missouri State Museum that focus on Lake Placid and  Whitley Sisters of KC., and special presentations by the Greater Kansas City-Leavenworth Area chapter.  J.R. Bruce is the current chapter president.  The chapter was started in 1966, one hundred years after the creation of the 9th and 10th Horse Calvary.  The chapter was the first to be assigned to the National 9th and 10th Horse Calvary.   He will be recognizing the recent death of the longtime chapter president, James Madison who passed away in March 2015.  Madison served over thirty years as president.  There will also be a special presentation about Cathay Williams, first African-American female to enlist and the only documented to serve in the United States Army posing as a man, under the pseudonym William Cathay. Williams was born as a slave in Independence, MO.

The Lafayette County Juneteenth Foundation has been hosting an Juneteenth celebration since 2005.  It is their tenth year anniversary. It has worked hard to provide an observance that emphasizes educating the public of the historic significance of Juneteenth. The foundation has been able to fulfill its mission from the help of volunteers from Lafayette County communities, and other communities.

“Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.  Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.” Junteenth.com

“PULLING TOGETHER—PUMPING UP” FOR 2015 - 150TH ANNIVERSAY OF JUNETEENTH





Lafayette County Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014at the Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO from 10 am to 5 pm. This is a free family-oriented event that has been held annually since 2005. The Lafayette County Juneteenth Foundation announces its schedule of presentations and exhibitors. The 4-H building is the location for exhibits and presentations. Exhibits are open at 10 am to 4:30 pm.



Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. June 19, 1865, union soldiers, led by General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with 2000 Federal troops to issue the order hat the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were free. This was two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that had become official on January 1, 1863.

12 Noon -until we sell out – “Juneteenth Cafe”. This is a fish fry fund raiser, includes fried fish, with sides, dessert and drink.



1:00 pm – 1:45 pm “I got my degree!” - A panel featuring young adults who have graduated from college since 2013 and 2014. Panelists include T'Quia Jones (University of Central MIssouri), Rachel (Elmore) Waden (University of Central Missouri) , Darrell Brooks II Missouri Valley College) , and Caleb Haynes (Central Methodist University). Clyde Williams is the moderator.

"Her Story/Our Story: The Exceptions that Created the Rule”



While the accomplishments of a few Missouri women are featured in our history books, many others lived important, fascinating, adventurous lives and only appear as footnotes. Our past is rich with the exploits of little known women who deserve to be remembered.



This exhibit presents photographs and capsule biographies of 35 women from Missouri’s past. Their adventures and experiences offer an exciting glimpse into Missouri’s anonymous history.



To know about them is to know a little more who we are. “Her” story is indeed part of our story.



This exhibit was developed by the Missouri State Museum and the Missouri Women’s Council. The exhibit is on loan from the Missouri State Museum located in Jefferson City, MO.

2014 Lafayette County Juneteenth Celebration Inspirational Speaker -Reverend Lucilla Miller

Rev. Lucilla Miller will be the inspirational speaker at the 2014 Lafayette County Juneteenth Celebration opening ceremony on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The event will be held at the Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO Her presentation will be at 10:00 A.M..



Rev. Miller is a dynamic, God fearing woman of God, who welcomes every opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, she lives to serve. She diligently labors besides her husband of 43 years, Bro. Ronald Miller. (former Superintendent of Bethel AME Church School). They are blessed with three adult children, and thirteen wonderful grandchildren.



Rev. Miller’s Church home is Bethel AME Church, located 2329 Flora Ave. Kansas City, MO. Where she once served as a Licentiate, under the leadership of Rev. Spencer L. Booker, Pastor.

Rev. Miller currently serves as the Pastor of St. James AME Church, 205 S. Conner, Odessa, Missouri.



Rev. Lucilla is a former President of Inner City Women Aglow in the Kansas City South District.

The praise team from the Powerhouse Ministries C.O.G.I.C. are the bringing the gospel music sounds at the Lafayette Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO.  The group is from Marshall, MO.  Charles Stephenson II is the pastor.

SPIRIT OF FREEDOM HONOREES AT LAFAYETTE COUNTY JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

 

WE SALUTE OUR SPIRIT OF FREEDOM HONOREES!! 

We are hosting the 2013 Spirit of Freedom honors to area African Americans who were the first to graduate from the Lafayette County, MO high schools that had finally integrated in 1956.  Come hear their personal stories at the Friday Night Fish Fry, June 14, 2013 from 5pm to 8pm at the Community building, Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO.  Herman Gant is the moderator assisting the honorees to share their stories.  Trivia and music is also part of the evening's activities. Fish fillet dinners will be sold for a $10 donation as a fund raiser for the Lafayette County Juneteenth Foundation which is a non-profit organization under 501C3.

We ask that others from the Higginsville High School , Lexington High, and Odessa High Schools Class of 1956 and those who were in the younger grades attend this ceremony and be in support of their class members. Also, the families of the deceased graduates are being contacted to stand in for their loved ones.



Special recognition and honors will be presented to the graduates by the superintendents of the representative high schools and other dignitaries. The honorees will be given presentations on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the opening ceremony at the Ed Schwitisky 4-H building, Fairground Park, in Higginsville MO.


Being on the other side of history, we now recognize the historical significance of this past hour. We are forever grateful for all communities who helped to make the transitions in our county smooth and safe for all students.
