Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. June 19, 1865, union soldiers, led by General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with 2000 Federal troops to issue the order hat the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were free. DISPLAYS/EXHIBITS

"Her Story/Our Story: The Exceptions that Created the Rule”

While the accomplishments of a few Missouri women are featured in our history books, many others lived important, fascinating, adventurous lives and only appear as footnotes. Our past is rich with the exploits of little known women who deserve to be remembered.

This exhibit presents photographs and capsule biographies of 35 women from Missouri’s past. Their adventures and experiences offer an exciting glimpse into Missouri’s anonymous history.

To know about them is to know a little more who we are. “Her” story is indeed part of our story.

This exhibit was developed by the Missouri State Museum and the Missouri Women’s Council. The exhibit is on loan from the Missouri State Museum located in Jefferson City, MO.
