2019 Juneteenth Welcome Dinner

Doris Jackson was so happy to come and meet members of the Shepard-Jackson family. She had received a copy of Ray’s bio and wanted to come and meet everyone. Orville Shepard bought her a copy of Ray’s book.  She and others took part in the Juneteenth Welcome Dinner.
Beside Mrs. Jackson is a Union soldier silhouette that was one of four that were on display. . These art forms were created by students of the Odessa High School art class under the tutelage of Ms. Nancy Wilson. The LCJF considers it an honor to have been gifted these art masterpieces!

In addition to our silhouettes, Wayne Seals displayed four beautiful pictures that were painted or designed by his sister, Rebecca and brother, Howard Seals. All of the art works added to the history and the blessings of Juneteenth. It would make a great feature article in the Higginsville Advance. Howard Seals wrote and published several books and lived and worked in Chicago.

Meet and Greet and Share Juneteenth activity

From the flag raising by Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troop 415 where we had 32 people, visiting with our long-time friend, Joe Aull, receiving proclamations from Mayor Bill Kolas, State Rep. Dennis Hoskins, Lafayette County Commissioners Tracey Dyer and Craig Williams, hearing from so many at the meet, greet & share - Helen Moore, Marty Wood, Alice Elmore, Fred Smith, Peter Wilkerson, Dale Felder, Emanuel Mason, Bishop William Thompson, Eugene Williams, Craig Williams, Arron Haynes, and family of keynote speaker, Ray Shepard, Reverend Wilbur Conway...wow! The meet and greet & share might be a great networking activity for us all. At 1 pm, Linda Niendick, Lafayette County Commissioner so graciously brought handouts about the Real ID mandate and answer voter registration/voting questions! Thank you all!

“UNITED WE STAND: NOW OR NEVER!”

The Lafayette County, MO Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Friday, June 14, 2019 and June 15, 2019. The theme of the event is “United We Stand: Now or Never!” The day will include the following activities: a flag-raising ceremony, a light brunch, meet and greet and voter registration and voting information workshop, commemoration service for the Civil War U.S.C.T. veterans who are buried in the Mount Muncie Cemetery, an exhibit of educational displays , a real life storytelling panel, historical Juneteenth memories since 2005 on video, and an evening program.

The evening program will start at 5:30 PM. It will include a potluck welcome dinner, music, and Mr. Ray Anthony Shepard, keynote speaker and author. As always, our event is free and family-friendly. Most of the day's activities are at the community building in the Fairground Park in Higgins ville, MO.

10 AM FLAG-RAISING CEREMONY - COMMUNITY BUILDING - 801 WEST 29TH ST. south of the 4-H building. Local cub scout troop will be assisting.

10:45 AM - MEET AND GREET, AND SHARING & LIGHT BRUNCH - Updates from government and area officials, agencies, and an update of an initiative on the care of African American cemeteries in the the county.

1 PM - VOTER REGISTRATION, VOTING INFORMATION, Real ID info. The presenter is Linda Niendick, Lafayette County Clerk, COMMUNITY BUILDING, 801 W. 29TH STREET - FAIRGROUND PARK

3 PM - CIVIL WAR U.S.C.T. COMMEMORATION SERVICE – Service is at the Mount Muncie Cemetery. Joseph Johnson, Perry Parker, and Charles Smith, Union soldiers will be honored. The Mount Muncie Cemetery is located south on Shelby Road in Higginsville, MO. Dr. Joahn Hall of the Howard A. Hall Foundation and Buffalo Six Ranch in Richmond, MO will have a special riderless horse tribute. Everyone is welcome and we ask that veterans come, too.

3:45 PM - OPENING OF THE EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS - COMMUNITY BUILDING - 801 W. 29TH STREET - FAIRGROUND PARK - Emanuel Mason shares his collection of Lexington memorabilia.

4:00 PM - Real Life-sharing Storytellers Panel, moderator Allan Lee. Reverend Wilbur Conway, Hazel Johnson, Emanuel Mason, Milton Smith, and James Watkins are the panelists. They will share about growing up, working, living in the county and other places. They will share words of wisdom and participate in a brief Q&A session.

5:30 PM - JUNETEENTH EVENING PROGRAM: POT LUCK DINNER, MUSIC - MEAT AND DRINKS PROVIDED BY THE JUNETEENTH COMMITTEE. ATTENDEES ARE ASKED TO BRING SIDE DISHES AND DESSERTS. (No dishes with shellfish, please! WE ARE ON THE MOVE!

Juneteenth Celebration on the Move! - Saturday, June 15, 2019 event will be a bus tour to historic sites. We will be visiting the Rose M. Nolen Black History Library in Sedalia(10 am arrival time) and the Pennytown hamlet in Saline County ( 1:15-1:30 pm estimated arrival time).

We will board the bus at 8:15 am and depart promptly 9 am. Meeting location to board the bus is at the shelter house adjacent to the community building in Fairground Park, Higginsville, MO.

 Lunch for the day will be prepared by the Taylor Chapel UMC Church in Sedalia, MO. Donations for the lunch and to cover the transportation costs greatly are appreciated. 

Estimated time of return is 5 pm. Please call or text Arron Haynes to reserve your seat at 816-419-3704! Please let us know if you are going to drive to the Nolen Library and want to be included in the lunch count.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. June 19, 1865, union soldiers, led by General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with 2000 Federal troops to issue the order that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were free. This was two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that had become official on January 1, 1863.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Author Ray Anthony Shepard was born in Sedalia, his father’s hometown. His mother was born in Marshall, where her father was enslaved until the Missouri Ordinance Abolishing Slavery in January 1865. Although Ray grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska he returned to Sedalia each summer to stay with his grandmother who lived at 305 West Johnston Street.

After serving in the US Army, Ray graduated from the University of Nebraska, taught middle school American History in Davenport, Iowa and then earned a master degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Education where he received a Martin Luther King Jr. Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. After graduating from Harvard he began a career in educational publishing and became the industry’s first African American Editor-in-Chief of a major publishing house.

After retiring from publishing he launched an encore career writing biographies for young adult readers about the lives of well-known and little-known African Americans who tipped the scales toward justice and equality.

Ray’s young adult biography, Now or Never! 54th Massachusetts Infantry’s War to End Slavery, is the story of two black Civil War soldiers whose battlefield dispatches documented their battle against Northern white racial arrogance as they fought Confederates’ attempt to establish an independent slave empire. It is the story of why and how black men answered Frederick Douglass’s call: “through Massachusetts we can get our hands on treason and slavery.” Their story gives readers a better understanding of how difficult it was for the country to free itself from human slavery and the economic gain of enslaved labor. Sergeant George E. Stephens and Corporal James Henry Gooding were just two of the 180,000 black Civil War soldiers who with courage and pride offered to sacrifice themselves on the altar of freedom to liberate enslaved African Americans.

Now or Never! received starred reviews from Kirkus and the School Library Connection and was selected by Kirkus and the New York Public Library’s “Best Books for Teens 2017.” The National Teachers of Social Studies chose it as a Carter G. Author Ray Anthony Shepard - 2019 Lafayette County Juneteenth Keynote Speaker
